What it is

Mobile device management, usually shortened to MDM, is a dashboard that gives you control over the phones and tablets your business owns. From it you can configure a device before anyone touches it, push out apps and settings, enforce passcodes, and lock or wipe anything that goes missing.

The practical difference shows up twice. When someone joins, their phone arrives already set up with the email, apps and Wi-Fi settings they need — out of the box, no half-day of fiddling. When someone leaves, or leaves a device in a taxi, you deal with it from your desk in a couple of minutes.

Who it suits

Roughly speaking, once you're past ten devices the admin starts to cost more than the software. It becomes close to essential if your staff handle client, patient or pupil data on their phones, or if you're answering security questions in tenders.

It's also the answer to a question we get often: what happens when someone leaves and their phone has all the company email on it.

The part people underestimate

MDM gives you a clear view of which devices are running out-of-date software. That's where most mobile security problems actually start — not clever attacks, just phones that haven't been updated in fourteen months.

We set the system up, write the policies with you and train whoever will be running it day to day. It's not something we install and walk away from.
